Birmingham Beer Festival 2005 The tenth Birmingham Beer Festival at Aston Students Guild took place from Thursday 15th - Saturday 17th September. Once again, it was well attended and features real ales and ciders from all over the UK. There were 88 beers in total available, 7 ciders and 5 perrys. This year's theme was the 200th anniversary of Nelson's finest hour at the battle of Trafalgar. Several local connections to this historic event came to light, including the manufacture of buttons for uniforms (in Hockley) and medals presented to the military of the time (made in Aston). Birmingham was also the first city to erect a statue in Nelson's honour.
Thursday afternoon saw Tania McMillan give a live interview to Radio WM's Jenny Jones, a real ale enthusiast herself. In the evening, acts from the Chaos acoustic club gave a series of performances to entertain the crowd and these were very well received.
Friday night saw the return of 'Back In Time', a very popular act playing Rock 'n Roll from the 50s, 60s and 70s. There were also a couple of performances from the Jockey Morris Men, who demonstrated various traditional Morris dances to a packed main hall. Food was again provided by Festival foods service, who have attended all 10 festivals held at Aston. The German Bratwürsts and French Crêpes went down well with the thirsty crowds.
Bottled beers came from a variety of countries and featured a wide range of styles. There was an emphasis on Belgium and France, with Germany, Austria and the Netherlands represented. There was also a beer from Corsica and a porter from Finland.
This year's festival didn't quite sell out as last year, but there was a small amount of a reasonable range of beer left to keep the customers happy right up to the end. © Richard Reynolds 2005 Articles from the Beer Festival edition of 'Out Inn Brum' |
