10 Years of Eddie at the Lamp Tavern One of Birmingham’s top real ale pubs
celebrated a notable anniversary during September 2003. The Lamp Tavern in
Barford Street, Highgate was taken over by Eddie Fitzpatrick ten years
previously in 1993. Since then, the pub has built a reputation for good choice
and quality of traditional beers over the years. It did not take Eddie long to gain the
attention of Birmingham CAMRA and ale lovers in general and the Lamp Tavern was
awarded the prestigious Birmingham ‘Pub of the Year’ accolade by the branch in
1994. A regular Good Beer Guide entry over the last 10 years, the pub boasts
four regular beers, plus 2 guest ales. The Lamp stood out as the only outlet in
Birmingham for Stanway Stanney Bitter in the early days and this is still the
case today. Marston’s Pedigree and Everards Tiger are joined by the classic
Church End Gravediggers as the other regular beers. The pub won ‘CAMRA
Birmingham Pub of the Year’ for the second time in 1997, when competition for
the award was extremely tough. The pub has a small front bar, popular during lunchtimes and early evenings, while the rear function room hosts regular live bands and meetings of numerous local clubs and societies. CAMRA Birmingham has held its AGM there for several years and the pub has also staged a number of regional CAMRA meetings in recent years. To mark the achievement, Wez Brown, Birmingham CAMRA Chairman, presented a certificate to Eddie at the recent branch AGM. Here’s to another 10 years of Eddie at the Lamp. © Richard Reynolds 2003 |
