Black Eagle - Pub Of The Year
2002
Thanks go to
branch member Richard Reynolds for the following review and all the pictures
inside the Black Eagle. Thanks also go to Bez for the exterior sunset photo of
the pub. Just a quick point: Soho House, one of the most interesting places to
visit in Birmingham, is nearby.

Birmingham CAMRA
selected the Black Eagle as its Pub Of the Year for 2002, after a closely
contested election. The pub had won the award on three previous occasions, the
last time being in 1999. This is the first pub to win the award four times, the
first success being back in 1992.
The Black Eagle is widely recognised
as a great pub in all respects. The top priority for judging this CAMRA award
is, of course, the quality and selection of real ales.
The pub has three regular beers, including Ansells Mild and the award-winning
Timothy Taylor's Landlord, all served in tip-top condition. There are also two
regularly changing guest beers, including locally-brewed Beowulf beers from
time-to-time.

The pub also boasts excellent food in the form of bar meals, sandwiches and
daily specials for the casual or regular visitor. There is also an a la carte
restaurant area, the popularity of which requires advanced booking.
The atmosphere is
always friendly, the four small rooms giving a homely feel to this 100-year-old
pub. A two-day beer festival is run in the garden area each Summer. The pub is
situated in Factory Road, Hockley, just 100 yards from Soho (Benson Road) Metro
Stop.
The award was presented by Wez Brown, Chairman of Birmingham CAMRA, on 3rd
February 2003. On that occasion, the two guest beers were Okells' Maclir, a
wheat beer from the Isle Of Man and the rather excellent Bishop's Farewell from
the well-established Peterborough brewers, Oakham Ales.
