The Bartons Arms - Birmingham CAMRA Pub of the Year 2004

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the Bartons Arms, High Street, Aston has been awarded the Pub of the Year award, after the pub was re opened by Oakham Ales only 2 years ago.

It has not been easy for managers Colin and Teresa Smith, especially in recent months and massive thanks go to them for doing such a wonderful job and making The Bartons Arms the pub it is today — Fabulous.

The Bartons Arms is popular with all of the local CAMRA branches, many of whom have held branch events in Birmingham’s finest. Three regular Oakham Ales are available; JHB, White Dwarf and Bishops Farewell are always complemented by an excellent range of guest ales, concentrating on quality, not quantity. Supplementing the real ales is an impressive array of Belgian bottled beers, which have created a bit of a following. And to complement the excellent range of beers, we have a set of staff that are a great credit to Colin, Teresa and the pub.

The Thai food menu is becoming even more popular, attracting many new visitors, many of whom return to the pub due to the high quality of the ales and the food.

The history surrounding the pub has been spoken about by many people (and written about within these pages), however, a brief description. Built in 1901 by James and Lister Lea, it is Grade II listed, one of the very few pubs in the UK to be so highly graded. It was CAMRA English Heritage Refurbishment Award Winner in 1995. And now, after refurbishment again the Boardroom and Function Suite are open and available for hire. The Boardroom can cater for around 20 people and the Function Suite is able to cater for as many as 100 people.

I’m sure many people would like to join me in congratulating Colin, Teresa, Oakham Ales and all the staff, a big well done for the hard work that has been put into The Bartons Arms.

Cheers
