Pub Of The Year 2006

The Wellington in Bennetts Hill has won the 2006 Birmingham CAMRA Pub of the Year award, its second consecutive win of this prestigious accolade. The award was presented to the Licencee, Nigel Barker, on Thursday 11th January 2007 at a CAMRA social evening arranged at the pub. Branch Chairman, Clive Walder, presented the certificate to Nigel, in front of a packed house.

Nigel has continued to stock a wide and constantly changing real ales at the pub, with some 2330 different beers being served during 2006. There is also a range of real cider and perry on offer, which is kept in the cellar to serve it at the ideal temperature.

The assembled crowd of pub regulars and CAMRA members showed their appreciation for the hard work that Nigel and Dave have put in, since they took on the pub in 2004. CAMRA Birmingham laid on a buffet to finish the evening off, was swiftly polished off. Thanks go to Gary for putting this on for us.

Also at the presentation was Dave Moorhouse, Nigel's business partner at the Wellington. His expertise has set up and maintains the pub's electronic beer board and website, where you can check out what's on at any time. Beers are graded according to colour, the lightest ales are given an 'A', while Stouts and dark Milds receive an 'E' grade.

CAMRA Members continued to 'test out' the real ales and ciders on offer late into the evening and with so many to choose from, there was no end of tasting. All in all, a great evening at the Wellington.
