Branch Trip to Slater's Brewery, Eccleshall, November 2002

The visit to Slaters' Brewery at Eccleshall took place on Saturday, 30th. November at 3:30pm. We weren't blessed with good weather, as it was dull and wet, and Birmingham city centre seemed to be grinding to a standstill, due to road closures and Christmas shopping. We all just managed to arrive for the correct departure time and soon set off, with some people using mobile phones to keep up to date with football scores.

After an hour's travelling, we arrived at the George Hotel, Eccleshall, home of Slaters' Brewery. After a pint or two in the bar, we met Mick Huxley, Slaters' under brewer, who took us around the brewery.

Mick was a perfect guide, explaining the brewing process and ingredients. Mick also answered many questions from home brewers among us. We also learnt quite a bit about Slaters' marketing policy and how they supplied pubs and pub chains, or not, as the case may be.

Slaters pride themselves on a quality product, rather than simply selling the beer to anyone prepared to buy. After we'd enjoyed our visit to Slaters, and some beer appreciation, we made for the Anchor Inn, High Offley. Not an easy place to find in the dark, but worth the effort. The Anchor is a lovely, friendly canalside pub. Wadworths 6X is the only real ale, served from the jug by the welcoming staff.

After leaving the Anchor Inn, High Offley, we returned for a last pint at the Anchor Inn, Digbeth.

Another successful trip had ended. More please, Wez!
