Camra Pub of the Year Awards 2008

This year, for the first time, Birmingham CAMRA made the decision to award Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Pub of the Year (POTY) awards rather than just one overall winner. This change was made due to the number of good pubs selling real ale and being serious contenders for the POTY. This was borne out by the fact that The Lord Clifden was awarded bronze and The Old Contemptibles came fifth in the overall competition.

The awards where made during January and all events were well attended and most enjoyable.

January 14th saw the silver award presented to The Black Eagle, Factory Road, Hockley, the perennially excellent little gem of a pub. Later the same evening The Lord Clifden, Great Hampton Street, Hockley received their bronze award. The Clifden, unexpectedly smart and stylish for its location, serves excellent ales and superb food and is a very welcome ‘new kid on the block’ to the POTY awards.

The presentation of the Gold award took place a week later at the start of their beer festival at The Wellington, Bennetts Hill, Birmingham, three times winner,.

Voting has already begun for the pub of the year 2009. If you know of any deserving pubs for consideration come along to one of our branch meetings or e-mail us with your suggestion
